Tremontaine - episodes 3 and 4 More excellent storytelling in episodes 3 and 4 of Tremontaine, which comes as no great surprise - lots going on for everyone involved, but particularly for Rafe who gets a lot of action both in and out of bed. In episode 3, 'Heavenly Bodies', we see Micah make a great step forward in mathematical terms and Kaab's realisation that her new friends' greater understanding of the world around them could spell disaster for her family's control of the chocolate trade. Th...
So far this seems along with Episode 2 to be the best two written parts of the four part serial so far. This was my first read by author Malinda Lo, really like her writing a lot, flows perfectly and will have to explore her writing more. Amused that no one yet has discovered that Micah really is a girl, not a boy but like how Ixkaab's character develops more and more and still my two favorite characters in this one. The parts about Rafe and William's relationship, are the way Joel Derfner shoul...
Tess is mourning her protector Ben, Kaab is consoling her, Micah’s discovery of artificial numbers as they relate to navigation, William, the Duke of Tremontaine asks Rafe to be his secretary, to keep him around and to keep him, Diane, the Duchess of Tremontaine is in hock up to her eyebrows, but keeps it from everyone. These are addicting! I read this on the Kindle.
I'm very much enjoying this serial. I've heard good things about Malinda Lo's writing, but this episode is very much in keeping with the overarching style of this story, so I'm not sure how much insight it gives into her personal oeuvre.(view spoiler)[In this segment, Rafe realizes what should have been a no-brainer last episode, and accepts a position under the Duke of Tremontaine (ha-ha) as his personal secretary. Unsurprisingly, this leads to the Duchess discovering her husband's philandering...
On to episode four (Season One) of Tremontaine titled A Wake in Riverside written by Malinda Lo.An unexpected offer from the Duke de Tremontaine forces a difficult decision upon Rafe. Pursuing her infatuation with the forger Tess, Kaab stumbles across evidence of murder . . . and hears the tale of a legendary crime. Meanwhile, Micah takes a bold step forward in unlocking the mystery of celestial navigation, putting the security of Kaab's people at risk.Yes! Kaab has finally been able to get a ho...
The image of the Duchess Tremontaine grinding her teeth over dinner was pretty entertaining. Really liking Kaab the most of all the characters, and her chemistry with Tess is delicious. All the episodes have been solid so far.
Another good entry. I like the approach to sexuality - no prejudice, no bigotry. Theres m/m - Will and Rafe, f/f - Kaab and Tess (well, so far it's in the flirting stage, but I root for them to end up together). Not sure what Micah will end up being, hopefully we'll get some asexual representation? I like how the book portrays her autism and how other characters understand and accomodate her - Rafe helping her with the sensory overload issues was so sweet! The world here isn't perfect of course,...
I'm burning through all of Riverside this autumn. This is mostly a plot-centric episode. There were certainly exciting developments, but no space was left over for lulls in the action or mood-setting passages. The weakest entry so far, but serviceable.
Thoroughly enjoyed this installment!
The story continues to be excellentI can't wait to see what happens next - I can't remember the last time I was so eager to follow a story.
