pat 1: loving it so far... had to buy it because i'd taken 'leaping man hill' out of the library without knowing it was a sequel to ledoyt, started falling in love with it the first few pages, and realized i had better read the first one first! if you've never read carl emshwiller, she is just wonderful. and while most of her stuff is 'speculative fiction,' these two are not. they are historical fiction, in fact, taking place in america in the days of the wild west. great stuff!part 2: completel...
One of the best books I've ever read. So sad and powerful and hopeful and poignant. It's a classic Western, but paints the story with characters that transcend time and place. Do yourself a favor and read this book! Emshwiller has crafted a hidden classic with this one.
Not as striking and exciting as Emshwiller's more fantastic and experimental works ("Carmen Dog," "The Mount," and her short stories). However, it's a strongly told coming of age and love story with interesting characters and a vivid Western setting and it offers an empathic exploration of family (including mother-daughter and father-daughter) relationships.Writers read this for: a well-done shifting point of view, third person narration between usual and engaging charactersQuote:"It's American
I love this book. It's a great tale of a difficult young girl growing up in the west and learning how to grow up the hard way.
I need to read this again - was assigned to read in a woman's studies class and remember I loved it.
I read this because I enjoyed Emshwiller's "The Mount" and wanted to try something else from her. "Ledoyt" is not a book I would have ever selected randomly, but I am glad I did. I good story written from the perspective of a girl/young lady. I liked the writing style. I could fully visualize the characters. I finished satisfied.
This book had a different kind of feel...I suppose related to the fact that it is written from a child's viewpoint, coupled with the setting, the language, the quirky characters... but I really liked it. It was just different in some inexplicable way.
