The Heroes is the story of disabled war veterans in a New England soldiers' home.

The hero of The Heroes is George Burley, a veteran with one arm. He is a cabinetmaker who has been forced from his job by the depression. The book begins with his entrance into the home. He comes reluctantly, full of dread and loneliness. But he gradually realizes that he can share the comradeship and common sympathy which exist among these men who live closely together under great difficulties.
