A poor man's Flight. The first half of the compilation is mediocre at best. It's unfortunate, as the second half contains some really great pieces. One story, Alpha Gorilla, is pretty much the ugliest, most nonsensical graphic story I've ever read.
Excellent artwork but the storylines n dialogue leave a lot to be desired.
As with most anthologies, a mixed bag. Koh Hong Teng, Lat and Sonny Liew's pieces stand out as the strongest. The first two and Troy Chin have also placed their pieces in a distinctly Asian setting.
Very strange collection of short comics.

This anthology brings together graphic novelists from Asia. I'm not sure if some meaning is lost in translation, but there's a lot of pretty ordinary story-telling in here. A couple are memorable, more so for their quirks than any riveting plot line. It's great that many aspiring writers have a vehicle for their work, but some of them should look for a new occupation.
Some quite good graphic short stories, and some that felt like a first draft. The better ones were Troy Chin's extract from The Resident Tourist - a short meditation on place, memory and change. Michael Chuah's Cube - nice art only needing a few words to create resonance. The Boy and the Paper Plane by Fong Nguyen. Eidolon by Charlene Chuah and Wayne Santos.
This anthology of southeast Asian comics is sort of a mixed bag - Some work is distinctly better than other work. Highlights include Sonny Liew's two contributions: a colorized version of Malinky Robot: Stinky Fish Blues, and his artwork on Mike Carey's story Face; Leong Wan Kok's fantastic and richly painted Metamorphosis and Invasion; Michael Chuah's geometric futurist piece Cube, and Kuanth's spooky and beautiful Rouge. Gerry Alanguilan's intensely detailed pen work and coloring on Love Hurt...
An okay collection. Nothing struck me as terrific. Many of the stories seemed to owe a large amount to manga style, which may mean knowing the tics and techniques of manga may make this collection more fun.
This is an excellent anthology, definitely a cut above the rest. Having the various creators from (mostly) Southeast Asia gives it a unifying theme. Some stories are wild flights of fancy, while others are down to earth, even autobiographical in nature. The first story to majorly stand out for me was Troy Chin's "The Resident Tourist." It's a nice little slice of life tale that makes its point without belaboring it. Nicely done! Other standouts for me included "The Trip" by Lat, "Face" by Sonny
These graphic comix and novellas are all from Southeast Asia. Varying kinds of stories and art (wide range of styles) and obviously very talented people. Very violent, but very creative.
(More pictures at parkablogs.com)Liquid City is a compilation of short comic stories from artists in Southeast Asia. If you've read the Flight series by Kazu Kibuishi, this anthology is somewhat similar except in style and storytelling. Sonny Liew is the editor for the book, and has his contribution inside. There are some really weird stories in the book. A few times weirder than the weirdest stories from the Flight series. This is especially true for Leong Wan Kok's Metamorphosis which is th
This graphic novel anthology is becoming a slight disappointment. The moment I saw the cover, I felt the need to read it. I then purchased it and read the most promising forward. The editor explained how comic books are the best way to relate culture because you do not have to worry about language in them. Then I started to read. Some of the stories were excellent and still haunt me while others were simply dull or just plain weird.I think this may be something to look into after I return from C...
interesting collection of stories/styles from a different culture
The quality of art is very hit-or-miss; some of it is quite good, a lot was unappealing to me. The stories were simply not engaging enough compared to other books I have available.
Some promising comics from SEA contributors. Among my favourites are:Metamorphosis by Leong Wan Kok - Man goes on a bug hunting trip, gets bitten by a strange bug and wakes up morphed into a bug himself. In his panic, he flees from his apartment and forgetting how to fly, splats on the pavement below. The truth is, he IS a bug who had a hallucination of himself as a human. Abit hard to swallow, but I still appreciate the twist on a classic.Cube by Michael Chuah - Extremely elegant and charming c...
another IMAGE anthology-- this one focuses mostly on creators from southeast asia. it's a good mix, but most of the stories were weird. like, i'd think there'd be a plot and then it'd end really randomly. hmm, okay. my favorite was probably the last story. as always these anthologies are --if nothing else-- a cool showcase of different talent out there.
I only vaguely remember buying this anthology at Midtown Comics and had no idea what the overarching idea was here. I was surprised to see that it was all Southeast Asian work. The artwork was absolutely gorgeous in most if not all of the stories. Some of the stories were a little strange but I found myself wondering if there were cultural norms that I was unaware of that would have helped make more sense of the stories. Overall very much worth a look for the artwork alone.
