This review is for The Lace Downstairs.3.5 stars, rounded up to 4 - Despite this being Martine's first published short story, I couldn't help but feel impressed. It's a bit rough, sure, but I can clearly see how someone could go from writing this to writing The Hydraulic Emperor or A Memory Called Empire. That style is present, and I definitely do like it. Lace reminded me of Mahit too for some reason, even if as characters they are quite different.
