Antoine de Montchrestien was the last and one of the most gifted authors of humanist tragedies in France. His works embody both the strength and weaknesses of French Renaissance dramaturgy, compensating for the slow pace and the scarcity of action shown on the stage by the eloquence and forcefulness of the characters and by the striking sonorities and images of the choral passages. Although he wrote during a period of religious civil wars, he avoided taking sides, even in plays based on Bible stories. In HAMAN he presents a heartfelt and poetic statement of religious faith, which he contrasts with an exceptionally vivid portrayal of an evil protagonist.

Also featured in this volume is a virtually unknown play on the same subject. PERFIDY OF HAMAN, an anonymous pseudo-tragedy published in 1622 is a rare example of Biblical farce. Filled with hilarious scenes of gluttony and buffoonery, as well as literary parody, it stands as one of the few plays of its generation that can be called stageworthy by modern standards. Both plays are here translated into English for the first time.
