Very weird and interesting. Spoilers ahead. In Mumbai, apparently such beings as Death and God work in a high rise office setting. Death is called to God's office to be let go, bc there's a baby being born that will bring eternal life and therefore making Death's job unnecessary. Death is bright into a human body, that of beautiful orphan Laila Starr. Death happens to be reborn in her body after Starr had jumped to her death at a party, and she just so happens to inhabit Starr's body in the same
This seems like its going to be a Sandman light set in India. As a first issue, this hits all the requirements (good intro to lead and stakes, bit of mystery, good pacing) .Also another annoying thing with a lot of new titles is that you can tell when a comic is meant to be a pitch for a tv show, and while this seems like it would make a great show, Many Deaths was definitely created for the comic medium
The Many Deaths of Laila Starr by Ram V and Filipe Andrade. The Goddess of Death gets fired and is sent to earth as a mortal. Hijinks ensue. This is fun! I love the art, the colors, the premise, everything. So onward we go to issue 2.Themes: Mumbai India, death gets layed off, Who knew they were so burocratic! A child is born that brings forth eternal life, Laila is on a mission to stay close to that child, if only she can stay alive long enough, Prana (God of Life) has a soft spot for her.5 Star...
3 ½ stars A Neil Gaimanesque sort of comic (think Good Omens & Sandman) set in contemporary India and featuring Hindu gods. Death is fired from her job and takes up residence in the recently deceased body of Laila Starr. There is a prophecy of sorts involving a child who apparently is destined to make humans immortal. Once in Laila, a vengeful Death decides to kill this newborn but her resolve falters once she has the opportunity to do so. The writing was better than the average comic and the ar...
This was beautiful. Great story, great art. A few giggles. Hindu gods in the modern world, very excited for this to continue.
I went into this with very little idea of the premise and no expectations. I was blown away! The art was absolutely gorgeous - very colourful and whimsical. The story and characters were very compelling! I can't wait to read the next one. I'd highly recommend this!
I fucking LOOOOOOOOOOOOVE to see POC and cultural representation matters so fucking much to meLaila and I have the same hair, the story is fun and paced well, love the unique art, the colours are breathtaking some people are comparing this to Sandman, and although Overture is outstanding (because J.H. Williams III art gives all eyeballs meaning) I thought Preludes and Nocturnes a slog and 2 star content at bestwhatever idgaf because this was fun, IT'S POC and I loved it
I wasn't sure I would like this story after reading the first few pages, but the characters are witty and it pulled me in toward the end. Death gets called into the office for a meeting with the boss, only to be fired after learning that a child is soon to be born who will one day invent immortality. She's no longer needed and is sent to live out her days in a mortal body. Of course, her new goal is to find the baby who cost Death her job and do away with him. His name is Darius, by the way. My
3.5* but I'll round it up to 4.This comic centers around the goddess Death, who is put out of a job by a mortal. She takes on a mortal form and the rest is the story of the comic.I feel like this series has a lot of potential. I like the way the story is told, the characters are vibrant and have abstract personalities, and the book is a quick read. I worry that as the series goes on, it will be hard to fit all of the story into comic panels, but I guess we'll have to see.
For a first issue, this did a pretty good job sucking me into the story. The art almost made me quit the whole thing, but since it was a freebie issue on Hoopla I figured I could tough it out.The goddess of Death has been let go and given a retirement package in the form of a mortal life. <--she's not particularly happyWhy? Well, a baby has just been born that will unlock the key to human immortality, making her a soon-to-be relic of the past. This did a good job of humanizing Death into someone
I’ve been in a reading slump and I needed something quick and fun to read. I stumbled upon this and now I’m caught up in the story. Death is fired and now she’s a mortal..but the crazy part is that humanity is going to become immortal.
I found this really funny. Kali (all in blue) and a corporate suit using using one of her many arms to freshen her lipstick before being sacked from her job as Death is an image that is definitely going to stick with me for a bit. Overall, I love this concept, loved the humor, and found the art interesting. If I have any complaint it would be the character names. As far as I understand things, this is all taking place in India. However, our main protagonist, and "antagonist" as it were have name...
I read the first two issues of The Many Deaths of Laila Starr. The goddess of death was fired and sent to live on Earth as a mortal. I love the art, but the story has a slow start so far. It’s interesting enough for me to want to see where the story goes and I think I’ll let the issues pile up before I read anymore. Other socials: Blog | Twitter | IG
This is incredibly cool. Not only is the story interesting, but also the setting makes it much more cool. And don't get me started on the colors! Those purples and reds and oranges! I'm not much of a comic book reader but I will definitely continue reading this series.
Loved the concept and artwork. Going to wait for the trade to drop to continue!
i like the art a lot, but the anglo gaze feels very uncomfortable
Okay I went into just knowing a tiny bit about waht it was, but it was like extremely good. I love stories where the character dies over and over and they have to do something to fix that, literally that's why i liked this first issue so much. I wasn't expecting it to be this good, and not only that but the writing is really good, i love that also. And don't get me started on the art style, it's so colorful and pretty. Overall I really enjoyed this and I will be finishing this series. It's too g...
Hindu gods with a twist written by an Indian?? Yes please.Death is fired from her job, lands herself a mortal body, and fails to kill the baby who put her out of godlihood. The issue is short enough to suck you in, and the writing is precise, well paced, and respectful. The artwork is nice, reminds me a bit of the umbrella academy — very pleasing to look at.
Not much of a story. We don't learn much about Laila Starr before her first death, or what happens to her spirit. Even the impetus behind *how* she dies is left undiscussed. I wish the author had given her a sense of self, had her make a decision. Made it clear she committed suicide, or was so depressed she got too close to the edge and fell off the building. Instead it feels like she was always a shell for Death. How does the original Laila die if Death has been fired? How does *anyone* die if De...
Really good tiktok recommendation I was scrolling through the app when I came across someone reviewing this. It piqued my interest and I thought "what the heck, I'll check it out. Sounds cool!" Onr of the best impulse about comics decisions I've made in a while. Beautifully written, stunning art and bright colors to capture the imagination. 10/10, highly recommend!
