Honestly as a free audiobook collection of horror short stories I wasn’t expecting much, but it was better than I thought it would be. Some of the stories are better than others that’s for sure. I will say my favorites are the one with the evil stepson, all the ones involving the ocean, and the one with the final girl and the killer monster going on a soul searching road trip. I hope to someday see a rom com with the final girl and the killer. Truly magically. The standouts are as follows:It Wash...
This was a fairly good anthology. The audio has just enough sound effects to keep this interesting and up the creepy factor just a bit, but not enough to distract from the story. There are a ton of shorts here, and some very definitely better than others. Horror overall, IMO, is better done on a wider scale- suspense needs time to grow. Some of these were slashers- all jump scares and no suspense. Some were fantastic teasers for (hopefully) longer works by the same author. Overall, this was a go...
This was hands down, the best anthology I had listened to this year.As with any book with different writers, some stories were better than others. But for the first time for me, none were bad stories. Daddy and In Sheep's Clothing were my favorites out of the bunch.

Come Join Us by the Fire is an audio collection of 35 horror stories that's available for free if you have the Google Play Books app. The stories range from flash fiction pieces only a couple minutes long to proper short stories closer to the half an hour range. Some of the authors provide more than one story. Most of the stories involve the supernatural or are surreal in some way. Many of them are metafiction or deconstructions of common tropes, which gives the impression that there isn't much n...
4.5 rounded to 5 for Goodreads. This is my review from www.scifiandscary.comTor Books’ announcement of its newest imprint, Nightfire, was met with much joy from this horror fan. I am a massive fan of small press horror, but it does my heart all kinds of good to see a larger publisher delving into the genre. While it may be a bit before books hit the shelves, Nightfire announced a FREE, 35 story anthology audiobook, Come Join Us by the Fire, in mid October and I didn’t waste any time in downloadi...
So close to 5 stars, I found the last few stories weak though.Excellent sampler of a range of established and emerging horror voices covering lots of creepy, unsettling and scary ground. A very diverse and contemporary collection! Faves: No Matter Which Way We Turned, The Girls from the Horror Movie, These Deathless Bones, Midnight Caller, When the Zombies Win, Beware of Owner, Greener Pastures, And when she was bad, El Charro. Two I previous faves, Ponies and 57 Reasons for the Slate Quarry Suic...
I guess the editor that chose these stories isn't a good match for my reading preferences. Looking through my ratings you'll see near the end there are many DNFs. I likely grew less patient. How to describe my issue.... shit didn't make sense. Too much was left to infer. Not complete stories. This will be a great book to use to determine if we are compatible readers. Most of these were flash fiction.~ Alyssa Wong - Rabbit Heart 3* Definitely interesting but not enough of a story for me. 7 minutes...
I was not expecting a free audiobook to be this enjoyable or impressive, but it absolutely was. I found some new authors I want to read more of and there were more than a few stories I might like to listen to again in the future. The background noises really amplified these stories and didn't distract from them at all, and almost all of the stories had themes which made me think past the story's end. Because there are 35 short stories in this collection and you can skip around on Spotify or wher...
Such a dynamic mixture of the weird, the unsettling, and the scary. I loved the clever (but selective) use of sound effects to enhance rather than distract from the experience. I definitely had favorites (Midnight Caller, Dream Home) but I enjoyed the collection as a whole too. And Saskia Maarleveld is a fantastic narrator - so I would pick it up just for her.
Some of these stories were better than others. I will say that the production value of this audiobook was amazing. They had really professional sound effects and all of the narrators were incredible. I'm looking forward to Season 2.
This is free. Go get yourself a copy! Link here If these stories are any indication of what we can expect from Tor’s new horror line NightFire, we have some excellent horror fiction to look forward to in the brand new year! The production and narration is excellent and the writing is strong and polished. You might want to grab yourself a copy while it is still free. I’m betting you’ll find something here you will love.As with all collections of this type, some stories will work better than othe...
Enjoyable collection, overall, with rather good narrators. There were a few clunkers, and a few meh ones, but I enjoyed most of the stories. I particularly recommend "These Deathless Bones" and "A Life That is not Mine".I started listening last fall, then the GoogleBooks app randomly declared that I'd finished it, and I lost my place. Annoyingly, the chapters are only labeled by number, not title, and I didn't feel like hunting through to figure out where I'd actually stopped until this fall, mo...
Some are great, some only manage to be long enough to introduce a character/idea and then don't do anything with it.
Prefacing this with 'I have stories in here and I do not normally review my own work for obvious goshdarned reasons' but also, I am making an exception here because:THE AUDIO TEAM SCARED ME WITH MY OWN DAMN STORIES. WHAT THE FLUFF, GUYS.
Some of the stories were compelling, but only one or two really scared me. I really enjoyed a couple but felt like they got cut short, and my favorite, also my favorite campfire story, was "Aren't you glad you didn't turn on the lights?"
This collection of short stories is Tor Publishing boasting their catalogue of horror writers, yet this boast is valid as it is impressive. As for the short stories, like every collection, most of us won't like every single tale, but they are collectively delightfully weird. Favourites for me were Black Bark by Brian Evenson, Black Neurology by Richard Kadrey and Midnight Caller by Stephen Graham-Jones, but there are many, so many, more to draw you in. The best news is, the collection is free, a...
This audio only (and free) horror anthology of 35 short stories acts as a flagship release of sorts for the upcoming horror imprint Nightfire (Tor). An anthology with not a single truly weak story in it is rare but here you have it. The authors and subject matter are varied and their approaches to the the weird are at times surprising which is not obvious when, like with most horror anthologies, many of the authors are still dealing in well worn tropes. More than anything, the audiobook can easi...
I read this before and shortly after the open subs period. It’s been so damned long though. I’m going to look up the toc to remind myself. There was one story at the end I didn’t read because it was over an hour and some new books became available on Libby. It was still a nice introduction (or in some cases re-intro) to some prominent names in horror. The Design is the one I skipped. I may come back to it after finishing Survivor Song on Libby.“Daddy” I remember liking. There was a story about a
Google Play gave away the first two volumes of this anthology for free back in 2019, but I finally listened to the first volume last night to celebrate Halloween. Although the quality of each story is inconsistent, the entire collection is OUTSTANDING!My favorite story was "Harold the Spider Man" which is perfect for those who suffer from Arachnophobia! The ending was extremely creepy . . . yet also hilarious! Never forget to feed your eight legged pets!
