This was so strange... At times I couldn't make sense of it, but all the same, it was compelling me to keep reading.
Like the other modern Sandman book I read recently, it was fine. I appreciate taking the story in a less familiar (to me) direction with the Loa, but I just didn't feel the story that strongly. And I was super confused when the first issue in the book _was_ the first issue in The Sandman Universe #1. I nearly stopped reading, thinking I'd accidentally recheckedout a book from the library.
An interesting premise drawing on some intriguing characters and folklore, unfortunately House of Whispers never reaches the heady heights of The Sandman from which it spawned. The plotting seems slightly rushed and confused, offering plenty of drama without pausing to really let us care about the characters.
I bought this as it was the most interesting and different of the new Sandman comics. It was fairly interesting, in that there was a big voodoo party. But the modern day lesbians baby sitting their younger sisters was a bit, er dull... It made me wonder what sort of family wouldn't let a 15 year old alone in the house as that was too young, as I was babysitting my sisters from the age of 13! One I will see about getting from the library in graphic novel, but not one I'll rush out and buy more in...
Gorgeous images and interesting story
I’m intrigued by this story!! I loved the colors and pacing of this issue!
Never thought anything could top House of Mystery but this is one amazing series. It's so reminiscent of Hellblazer's Papa Midnight.
Neil Gaiman's The Sandman is one of my all-time favorite comic book series. When I learned that the characters would live on through stories told by different authors, I was both excited and wary. However, with Nalo Hopkinson (who is known for putting a Carribean spin on fantasy and horror), I knew the story would be in good hands. Her take, The House of Whispers is phenomenal, with gorgeous illustrations by DOMO. When the Dreaming begins to be disturbed by unusual occurrences, it unleashes stra...
This hovers at a high 3. Maybe a 3.8Detailed colourful drawings of voodoo deities and souls that are captured in The Dreaming leaving the walking dead on Earth. An original story-line. Slightly obscure and confusing, which didn't really add to the reading experience.
This was hard to follow in some parts, even with some background knowledge of voodoo. Not sure if I'll continue to read this one. The illustration, however, is fantastic.
I have loved Erzulie ever since I learned about her. It’s thrilling that she will initiate us into the world of the loa and become part of the Dreaming. Some ppl have been giving bad reviews to this first issue without understanding that there is world building, an entire new religion/pantheon and setting along with culture to establish. It’s fascinating to see how Erzulie is portrayed and illustrated as a mermaid matriarch whereas my own vision of her differs as I’m sure it does for all of thos...
I would give this 3.5 stars if I could. It was good, but not great. Very much an introduction to a mystical comic book series - so hard to rate as a stand alone. It did not blow me away, but I will pick up the next few issues and. Ay re-visit this review at a later date depending on how other issues go.
Meh. I was so happy to see the Sandman Universe added onto and I love voodoo lore so I jumped on this comic. Not too impressed though, I felt like they tried to cram too much story into it and the plots came out broken and hard to follow. Hopefully future issues will trim it down a little and be more cohesive, I'll probably read them eventually but not running out to get the next one.
Just couldn't get into this issue at all.
lovely to be back in the land of dreams - and I totally knew that Daniel kid couldn't cut it.entranced by the new gods and goddesses, impressed by the ability of author and artists to recreate New Orleans in all its splendor and sleaze.
Wow. This new series started well but really went downhill. The storytelling is confused and the artwork quite shoddy. I'm not sure I'll persevere? The other strand, The Dreaming, looks much more promising to me.
This was probably the most interesting of the comics I read this week. Three-quarters of it takes place inside Ezrulie's ... palace? home? I'm not sure quite what to call it, but on the outside, it looks like a two-storey swamp shack built out of wood, while on the inside, it's some kind of palace inhabited by Ezrulie, her relatives, and the dreaming forms of all of those who worship her and gather amidst some kind of frenetic, frenzied party/celebration/invocation. Holding court, Ezrulie is pet...
The third of four Sandman Universe graphic novels this year that I've read. And definitely enjoyed. WAY better than Lucifer but not quite as good as The Dreaming. I loved the New Orleans location and the weaving of bayou deities.A fun story and beautifully drawn and inked.
I'm super excited to see where this story goes.
