While A Lanodekan Bestiary can be enjoyed on its own, the book is also a companion piece to the fantasy novels, The Monster Realm and The Three Worlds, by Nara Duffie. In those stories, mythical creatures like dragons and griffins lived on earth long before humans evolved. Eventually, humans spread across the world, hunting monsters almost to extinction. The monsters created an alternate world called Lanodeka, where they have lived ever since.
When three girls--Lillian, Katy, and Maisy--find their way into Lanodeka, they have many exciting adventures and meet many mythical creatures, including the Librarian of Lanodeka. The Librarian is an ancient harpy who gave up the bloody ways of her tribe and devoted herself to knowledge, especially history and mythology. A Lanodekan Bestiary is one of many gifts the Librarian created for Lillian--gifts which, for a surprising reason, she was never able to deliver.
The first part of this book contains coloring pages for several Lanodekan residents. The second part includes many more, but without the histories and mythologies--so you can create your own stories.
