I'm not going to do any real review or rating of this book, because I have an essay in it. But I did want to say just how much I'm enjoying reading the other contributions! Also (because I'm halfway through the first section now), I'm also really looking forward to reading the section of letters between Tiptree/Sheldon and Ursula LeGuin, which comes later in the book. I am really, really happy to be a part of this book.
James Tiptree Jr., AKA Raccoona Sheldon AKA Alice Sheldon, died nearly thirty years ago. In an unfortunately brief career, she made an indelible mark; not only for her groundbreaking, feminist stories, but because of the fact that she wrote most of them under the male pseudonym of James Tiptree Jr, before being outed as Alice Sheldon after her mother's death. This book celebrates what would have been her 100th birthday, and is filled with poignant essays of current SFF authors writing about what...
Letters to Tiptree edited by Alexandra Pierce and Alisa Krasnostein is a collection of letters written by contemporary authors to Alice Sheldon/James Tiptree Jr published on the hundredth anniversary of her birth. For the context of my reading this book, I want to note that I have not read Tiptree's/Sheldon's biography (it's on my wishlist) and the only fiction of hers I've read is The Starry Rift, which certainly does not contain her most well-known stories. I did listen to the Tiptree-themed Ga...
This is what you need to know about Letters to Tiptree, edited by Alisa Krasnostein and Alexandra Pierce:"In celebration of the 100th anniversary of Alice Sheldon’s birth, and in recognition of the enormous influence of both Tiptree and Sheldon on the field, Twelfth Planet Press is publishing a selection of thoughtful letters written by science fiction and fantasy’s writers, editors, critics and fans to celebrate her, to recognise her work, and maybe in some cases to finish conversations set asi...
http://nwhyte.livejournal.com/2519476.htmlThis is yet more evidence of the Australian surge in feminist sf commentary (which, let's be very clear, is a Good Thing) spearheaded by the Galactic Suburbia team, two of whom have assembled this volume of (mostly) letters in tribute to James Tiptree jr / Alice Sheldon who was born 100 years ago this month. The first half has literally dozens of letters written to Tiptree / Sheldon by today's writers, reflecting on what she means for them. They are most...

This is a hard book to rate because it's a compilation of many things - letters from current (mostly female) writers to an imagined Tiptree, thanking her for her influence on their own work (which I would give three stars), letters between Tiptree and Urusula K. Le Guin (which I would give ten thousand stars), letters between Tiptree and Joanna Russ (which I would give five stars) and somewhat literary essays (which I would give three stars). I suppose it rounds out to 4. I encountered this as a...
One of the many things I’ve discovered this year is how much I didn’t know about the historical side of writing – particularly women’s writing in spec fiction. There are many reasons for this, but it makes the historian (and reader) in me want to know more. So, I was thoroughly intrigued when Alisa and Alex started talking about James Tiptree Jr and their plans for this fabulous book.James Tiptree Jr was a highly considered, award winning short story writer who was involuntarily ‘revealed’ to be...
I have never read a work by James Tiptree Jr / Alice Sheldon / Raccoona Sheldon. But after reading this tribute to the author, I know in my bones that when I do, I will have touched greatness. In the letter-writing tradition of Tiptree/Sheldon, the editors of this book asked for science fiction and fantasy authors of today to write letters to that writer, to share what his/her words have meant over the decades since their prominence (1970s, mainly). The editors wisely chose also to share some of
When Twelfth Planet Press sent me a review copy of Letters to Tiptree, I admit I was a little apprehensive. I've not read any of the stories Alice Sheldon published under the names of James Tiptree, Jr. and Raccoona Sheldon. I'm not even especially interested in science fiction spanning the late 60s and 70s--though I have felt some pressure to become familiar with this era of canon, much as Renay has commented. So I was a little bit surprised by just how much I enjoyed this book.Letters to Tiptr...
I like the authors podcast. I liked a Tiptree biography I read.I liked some of her stories and after the fact (but too late to change my emotional connection)now understand the stupid seeming annoying ones were that way not because she was a terrible writer, but that the sexist stupid characters were supposed to seem sexist and stupid.I like SFF book geek culture. This is just a bit too esoteric for me, too removed and missing context. It's letters by people who I mostly don't know but maybe shou...
This collection of "letters" (and letters) to James Tiptree Jr. (and Raccoona Sheldon and Alice Sheldon) alongside other selected writings to give us an "insight" into the character of that particular trinity of writers, is divided into four sections. I am going to divide this review into two, to cover the "letters" written to Tiptree on the centenary of Alice Sheldon's birth alongside the letters of the late '70s and early '80s between Tiptree/Shedon and Ursula K. Le Guin and those from Joanna
Letters to Tiptree (ed. Alisa Krasnostein and Alexandra Pierce), produced on the occasion of Alice Sheldon/James Tiptree Jr.’s 100th birthday, is not exactly a festschrift, not quite a memorial volume, certainly not a biography. Let’s just call it a celebration. Although it has no direct connection to Julie Phillips’ in-depth biography James Tiptree Jr.: The Double Life of Alice B. Sheldon, It probably would not exist—certainly not in this specific form—without the existence of that work, which
Maybe five star is excessive , but I really liked it. It's divided into three sections : first comes a section where current writers write their letters to Uncle Tip (including Seanan McGuire , Nicola Griffith , Rachel Swirsky , Nisi Shawl ) , second a selection of letters between Tiptree and Le Guin and Joanna Russ , and last is a few more in depth pieces about Tiptree . The middle section covers material that's available other places , Phillips biography Larbalestier's text, but worth rereadin...
This is a book that I think needs to be owned. I will eventually have to read many of the writers who contributed letters to this compilation. It's a very touching homage to a sci-fi writer who clearly touched do many lives. To read these letters feels intimate. Each letter contributes a piece of heart to the community that has rallied around these names, this person, with personas.I picked it up because so many authors I enjoy had contributed it and I thought, huh, it must be something. but rea...
The third instalment in my current TIPTREE OBSESSION; this was a great thing to read hot on the heels of Tiptree's short stories and the Phillips biography, especially the section containing some of the letters between Tiptree and Ursula Le Guin & Joanna Russ.
