Pharaoh, also known as "The Pharaoh and the Priest", is the fourth and last major novel by Polish writer Boleslaw Bros. It was the only historical novel by an author who had earlier rejected historical novels on the grounds that they inevitably distort history. Czesław Milosz described Pharaoh as "a novel about the mechanisms of state power and, as such, perhaps unique in nineteenth-century world literature....Bruce, in casting the reign of 'Pharaoh Ramses XIII' in the eleventh century" sought the film To a perspective separate from topical pressures and censorship, as the film takes place in Egypt in the period from 1087 to 85 BC, as that country faces internal pressures and external threats that culminate in the fall of the Twentieth Dynasty and the New Kingdom. The young protagonist Ramesses learns that those who challenge the authorities that... She will be vulnerable to co-optation, seduction, submission, defamation, intimidation, and assassination. Perhaps the main lesson, recently absorbed by Ramesses as pharaoh, is the importance of power. Bruce's vision of the fall of an ancient civilization derives some of its force from the author's profound awareness of the final demise of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in 1795, a century before the novel's completion.
