Henry Percy, Ninth Earl of Northumberland of Syon House, who was also known as the Wizard Earl for his interest in science, was unwittingly implicated in the Gunpowder Plot when his cousin called on him at Syon House on 4th November, 1605. Thomas Harriott the mathematician was also present while they were having dinner, the Earl being his Patron, introduced to the Earl by Sir Walter Raleigh.
The Earl's cousin had caused suspicion to fall upon them all. The Earl and Harriott were arrested and interrogated at The Tower of London.
