In her introduction to this issue of Recommended Reading, Elizabeth Ellen, editor of Hobart and guest editor of this issue, says "Pearl" by Mary Miller is "tight and droll and is in general 'classic Mary Miller. ...The opening of the story reminds me a little of Mary Gaitskill’s 'Secretary,' possibly because it’s set in an office and there is mention of pantyhose and short skirts and high heels and fingers in mouths."
