Catherine Babkina’s book “Mustard” is a collection of personal naive poems, rhythmical and rhymed, which contains no vers libre and no inanimate text – instead, a bit of humor, bitterness, impartiality, compassion, tenderness, lively colloquial words and f-words. The author of the cover design and illustrations to this naive poetry is a famous Ukrainian artist Hrytsia Erde from Lviv. “Of course, each reader and thus re-reader, will have own list of favorite places in this collection”, Yuri Andrukhovych writes in his preface to the poems. “But what will unite all of us is absolutely suitable intonation of Kate Babkina, we have believed it. This sadness mixed with irony, this light, as if after the sixth coffee, bitterness. After all, what is bitterness, if not the same irony – if we, of course, speak about poetry? And also about the inexhaustible intonation resources of the Ukrainian accentual-syllabic, with which it will last a long time – exactly that time as the language itself will last”.
